It's rug weather and we're here for it!

You know the moment. It's a dark October morning in Oban, the rain is coming sideways off the bay, and you step out of bed onto a floor that feels like it's spent the night in the fridge. 🥶

Socks help. A rug helps more!

Hard floors look great and they're easy to keep clean, but once the clocks go back they can make a room feel chilly no matter how high you turn the heating. A rug won't replace your radiators, but it puts something soft between your feet and a cold floor, and you notice the difference straight away.

Why a rug makes a room feel warmer

It's warmer underfoot. Laminate, tiles and bare boards are cold to the touch. Your feet are the first place you feel the chill, so that's where a rug earns its keep.

It covers the draughty bits. Plenty of homes round here are older, and a bit of cold air finding its way up between floorboards is just part of west coast life. A decent sized rug covers a good chunk of the floor and takes the edge off.

It makes the room look cosier. A big bare floor can look cold even when the room is warm. Add colour and texture and it suddenly feels lived in, especially with the lamps on at 4pm.

It's quieter. Rugs soften footsteps and echo. Handy if you've got kids (or a dog) thundering about.

Our picks for a cosy winter

Faux sheepskin: the one you'll fight the dog for

The Auckland Faux Sheepskin Rug is about as cosy as it gets. Soft faux sheepskin on a faux suede backing, and it's not just for floors. Throw one over an armchair or the end of the sofa and you've got somewhere warm to sit on a cold night. Comes in white or silver, in sizes from a small single right up to a quad. From £50.

Shaggy rugs for a deep, soft pile

If you want to sink your toes into something, go shaggy. The Ariana Shaggy Moroccan Rug has a deep 30mm pile with a high-low texture and a tassel fringe. There are 9 Moroccan inspired designs to choose from in 4 sizes, from £65.

Got a bigger room to fill? The Alto Moroccan Shaggy Rug goes all the way up to 240 x 340cm, and there's a runner size too. From £75.

Wool rugs

Prefer a natural fibre? The Asra Boho Wool Rug is 100% wool and hand woven, with a bobble finish and fringe. It comes in cream or ivory, so it sits nicely with pretty much any sofa. From £110.

For something with a bit more colour, the Aspect Multi Wool Rug is hand tufted in 100% wool with an interlocking basketweave pattern. Choose blue, grey or red. From £360.

A bit of glamour for the long nights

Winter evenings are long up here, so why not have something lovely to look at? The Ascot Opulent Rug is a wool and viscose mix with a velvety soft feel and chunky metallic borders. There are 10 colourways, and custom sizes are available to order. From £110.

The Aston Rug has a subtle sheen that shifts as you move round the room. Pick from copper, green, navy, ochre or silver. From £190.

Low pile rugs for doorways, hallways and under furniture

Not everywhere suits a deep pile. Our Aurora collection has an 8mm pile that sits neatly under furniture and won't catch the bottom of a door. The shiny finish catches the light too, which is a real bonus on a gloomy afternoon. Have a look at the Aurora Cloud, Aurora Dune, Aurora Marble Gold and Aurora Storm Blue. There's a runner size in the range for hallways as well.

For the back door and the boot room

Wet dogs. Muddy wellies. A west coast winter! The Antibes indoor/outdoor rugs are woven in Belgium from tough, non-shed yarns and made to be used inside or out, so they're a handy pick for the back door, porch or utility room. Try the Antibes White Grey Grid or the Antibes Linear. From £45.

Getting the size right

The most common mistake we see? A rug that's too small. It ends up floating in the middle of the room and doesn't do much for warmth or looks. A few quick tips:

  • Living room: aim for a rug big enough that at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs sit on it.
  • Bedroom: go for a size that pokes out either side of the bed, so your feet land on it first thing in the morning.
  • Not sure? Mark the size out on your floor with masking tape before you buy. It's amazing how different it looks once it's down.

Our rugs come in sizes from 80 x 150cm right up to 240 x 340cm, so there's something for most rooms.
